Triumph of the ApeDonkey - Netflix reviews 1/11/11

The War of the Century - Should See - Nicely produced BBC documentary series about the war on the western front during WWII between the Soviets and Germany. The film does a great job of documenting the atrocities on both sides as well as spotlighting the unprecedented death caused by two unrelenting, paranoid, unmerciful leaders, Hitler and Stalin. Most of the soldiers who are featured and interviewed speak either Russian or German so be prepared to read a lot of subtitles but the candor of these men who were on the front line is at times bone chilling.

JCVD - Must See - If you go into this thinking you are about to see Hard Target 2 then you'll probably be disappointed. If you are like me though and the typical Van Damme movie isn't really your taste anyway but you want to see a really good movie, then JCVD will satisfy. Jean-Claude Van Damme who plays down on his luck action star Jean-Claude Van Damme finds himself in the middle of a robbery while visiting his home town in Belgium. If I hadn't already heard how good he was in the movie I would have been stunned by Van Damme's performance. He's funny, pathetic, heroic and completely believable as the emotionally and financially down trodden action hero. Very good movie, excellent performance.

Triumph of the Nerds - Should See - This was originally a three part PBS documentary series about the development and rise of the personal computer produced in 1996. The production is actually pretty bad and the host/narrator is on par with a defensive driving instructor. Two more minutes of screen time for this guy would render the entire series unwatchable. However, the outstanding interviews with people like Bill Gates, Paul Allen, Larry Ellison and the considerably smug Steve Jobs makes fighting through the cringe evoking host completely worth it. You get to learn the incredible luck, determination and vision it took to build companies like Microsoft and Apple. You also learn about the major missteps made by other players in the industry that cost them billions in the long run. It's really incredible to see how far we've come in the just the past 15 years. What's even more stunning is just how fast the PC market grew because of a handful of people who understood its potential. I found the interview Oracle's Larry Ellison especially extraordinary simply because so much of what he predicted would happen with technology actually did.

Smash His Camera - Should See - Ron Galella may or may not be one of the most dispicable people on earth but he is definitely one of the tackiest. Galella is probably the most famous of all paparazzo. He's famous for hounding Jackie O. for years until she had to have a restraining order brought up against him. This well done documentary sheds light on Galella long dubious career. A career that includes some very famous court cases and law suits between Galella and such stars as Marlon Brando and Jackie O. Interviews with both those who have supported his work and his detractors illustrate how polarizing he and the paparazzi in general are. The one thing that can not be forgiven though is his "garden." See the movie and you'll know what I'm talking about.

The Comedians of Comedy: Live at the Troubadour - Should See- This is the live concert follow up to the Comedians of Comedy documentary. If you're a fan of stand up then this is well worth checking out. Great group of comedians including Patton Oswalt, David Cross, Zach Galifianakis, Sarah Silverman and Brian Posehn. My advice would be to skip the Maria Bamford set but that's just me.
