Spartacus: Gods of the Arena "Paterfamilias" Review

Tonight we found out Batiatus has Daddy issues and they're here to stay. The moment Batiatus the younger corrects himself to praise the glory of the house of Quintus Batiatus, you know the good times won't last. The senior Batiatus abruptly interrupts the party just as things are getting interesting between his son, Gaia and Lucretia.

Much of what happened in tonight's episode pits the established versus the upstart both in and outside of the arena. Quintus the son versus Titus the father appears to be one sided. The father disapproves of his sons shortcuts to gain favor and quickly undermines all his hard work. While in the arena the hardly trained Crixus is given a spot in the arena against Auctus before he's been officially made part of the brotherhood of gladiators.

The question the episode poses is who's path is right? Are parallel roads leading to the same destination? At the end of the episode that is what we are left to believe. Quintus took a chance because in buying Crixus from Tullius not only to gain favor but because he saw something in the Gaul. Titus failed to see the same potential in both Crixus and his son. The Gaul victory over Auctus forced Titus to look beyond his preconceived notions and to put faith in his son.

There is still awkwardness between Oenemaus and Gannicus following last week when Gannicus was forced to have sex with Oenemaus's wife. Though he doesn't know yet, the showdown between the two is coming. Right now Oenemaus is having trouble transitioning to his new role as Doctore. He's yet to embrace the role and his new found station above the men. He is ultimately stunting their training by no asserting himself into the new role. I have a feeling once he finds out about Gannicus and his wife, he won't be so shy about using that whip.

Socially the house of Batiatus is becoming quite famous for their debauchery and well stocked supply of virgins. But we already knew that.

With only three episodes left, they'll have to start building towards destiny and the showdown between Crixus and Gannicus in which the Gaul ascends to his place as the champion of Capua. Also look for Quintus and Lucretia to find a way to move daddy Batiatus out of their way.
